It is never too early to start thinking about the Holidays… If you would like to be a part of this year’s Holiday Crafts Faire, please contact Stacy Schoeningh 996-1022 or Kristi Magnani 996-8386. We need parents to donate their time helping at the event. We are really counting on new parents stepping up to help with this event, so please do so! Thanks in advance for your assistance. An Update on Reading Fluency: Think of something you have become pretty good at… How did you do it? How can we help our children become Fluent, Competent Readers? In a WORD: PRACTICE!! |
A child can only become a better reader if he/she practices reading. It’s not unlike learning to play a musical instrument, or learning a new sport – you can only improve if you PRACTICE. Be sure your child reads every night. It’s one of the most powerful gifts you will ever give your child.
If you need books for your home library – call El Verano School and ask for Ms. Pulido. We have many books in our Healthy Start library that we’d love to give to a good home!
Support your child’s classroom programs!
We certainly hope that you have signed up your ATM card with E-Scrip! Every purchase you make with a registered card at participating merchants sends money our way. Safeway, Sonoma Market, American Airlines, PetSmart, Olive Garden and hundreds of other stores donate a portion or your sale to the school of your choice. We want you to sign up for E-Scrip! You can register on line at www.escrip.com. Our school’s ID number is 140618981 or you can call the school office and we’d be happy to send you home a form to complete. Thank you in advance for your support!
December Lifeskill… Patience
Dear Family,
Remember the saying, “Patience is a virtue?” Webster’s Dictionary defines patience as waiting calmly without complaint; steadfast; faithful; dependable – all excellent character traits in a family member, friend, and an employee.
As family members, you understand how demanding on a child or a few children can be. In the classroom, where we have many more students, the LIFESKILL of Patience is an extremely important skill for both the teacher and the students to use. Some of the ways you can further continue our study of patience:
· Insist that children take turns
· Reading chapter books – one chapter per night.
· Encouraging your child to set some long-term goals, such as saving for a pair or roller blades, a bike, or a movie ticket.
Family members are their children’s best role models. Help your child to become a better learner by modeling a sense of perseverance, patience and inner strength!
ELAC Meeting Friday, December 7th at 6:30 pm. We are trying a new day for ELAC meetings. We are hoping a Friday night will be less stressful and easier for people to attend. Please join us to discuss:

El Verano Students show GREAT progress!!
The results for this year’s AYP (the Federal Government’s measure of student progress) and API (the State’s measure of student progress) show that we have made substantial growth in our subgroups and that we are on the right track!
The API is what we call a “growth model” as it looks at whether students are making progress (towards being proficient) from year to year. The goal is for all “subgroups” to reach an API score of 800. Additionally, both measures break down our student populations into subgroups, labeling them as “White,” “Hispanic,” “Socio-economically Disadvantaged,” etc… These labels are given to us as a way to look at how well each subgroup is succeeding.
This growth is simply fantastic; we couldn’t do it without the support of our El Verano School Community. It is through dedicated efforts by students, staff, parents and community members, that we are continuing to move our students towards proficiency in math and language arts– we thank you whole-heartedly! We’d like to share our API results:
